(#7) Vikings Fall to (#2) Cumberland CC in Region XIX Playoffs

Toms River, NJ - The Ocean County College Men's Baseball team ended their season on Sunday (5/13), after a postseason run which saw the team pick up wins against Delaware County CC and Cumberland County College.

The Vikings kept their postseason play alive with a two-game split on Saturday. First, Ocean defeated Delaware County CC in the Region XIX tournament play-in round, with an 11-inning, 6-5 win. Kyle Lauria hit a solo home run and Dom Wojdyla singled in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the 11th for the win. This win advanced the Vikings to the first round, which was a Best-of-3 series against Cumberland County College. Ocean lost Game 1 to the Dukes by an 11-5 final score. The score was tied at 5 heading into the bottom of the 8th inning until Cumberland exploded for 7 runs to put the game away. Kyle Lauria hit another home run in this game, while Mike Calabrese hit a 3-run home run to tie the game in the 4th.

The Vikings returned to action on Sunday for Game 2 of their series against Cumberland, and evened the series with a 4-2 win. Vikings pitcher Matt Malatesta pitched masterfully against the #2-ranked Dukes, surrendering just 1 earned run while allowing 4 hits and striking out 7 over 9 innings in the victory.

Unfortunately, Ocean was unable to keep the momentum going, as the Vikings lost to Cumberland in Game 3 by a 6-3 score, ending the series. Ocean's Nick Moglia, Dhillon Barbetti, and Mike Calabrese belted doubles in the loss.

The Vikings finished the season with an overall record of 27-19. Congratulations on an outstanding 2018 season.
