OCC Esports Program Expands to Three Games for Spring 2021 Season

Toms River, NJ – The Ocean County College Athletics Department has announced that it will expand its Esports program and will compete in three games instead of one beginning with the spring 2021 season. Led by Head Coach John Ruhl, OCC Esports launched in the spring 2019-20 semester.

Competing in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo Switch), Ocean captured a national singles championship in its first season and is currently entering the postseason to compete for a second. The program will try to achieve similar success in Overwatch (for PC) and Rocket League (Nintendo Switch), which will join Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the Vikings’ spring 2021 schedule.

“Between Smash Bros., Overwatch and Rocket League, we feel like there’s something for everyone,” said Coach Ruhl. “No matter the experience or skill level, all are welcome to join our team. We have a great time, and you’ll make friends for life.”

The Vikings will tentatively compete in Overwatch (PC) on Mondays at 5 p.m., Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo Switch) on Tuesdays at 5 p.m., and Rocket League (Nintendo Switch) on Thursdays at 5 p.m.

Are you interested in participating in OCC Esports? All are welcome, including students who play on other platforms. Please contact Coach Ruhl at occ-e-sports@ocean.edu for more information.
