OCC Golf Team Takes 3rd Place at Galloping Hill

Toms River, NJ - The Ocean County College golf team made some birdies Monday (4/3) and placed 3rd at Union College's invitational golf tournament at Galloping Hill. Led by 1st club Tommy Donachy's 93, and paired with Bryan Potter's 104, the Vikings shot their best 18-hole total of 395, 23 strokes better than their previous best, improving by about 6 strokes per man to beat host Union and Raritan Valley for the top 3 showing. Potter, playing in his very 1st competitive golf round ever, started out with a birdie-3 on the par 4 1st hole and nearly holed-out for an amazing eagle-3 on the 18th. Teammates Matt Heberling and Logan Burnett added to the fun with rounds of 98 and 100, respectively.

"The boys played very well," said Ocean County College Golf Head Coach Sean Fawcett. "We improved by more than 20 strokes from our last event and could be even 20-30 shots better. The guys are finding their games and are improving every day."

Next up for the Vikings is Morris County's home match next Monday (4/10) at Flander's Valley Golf Course. This tournament will serve as a preview of the 2023 GSAC Invitational, scheduled to take place at this same course later this month on April 26. Ocean finished in 3rd place at the 2022 Garden State Athletic Conference championship at Flander's last year.

"We're looking forward to the challenge," said Fawcett. "Flander's is a stern test of golf. But if we play well, we'll be in the running for another top spot."
