OCC Golf Places 4th in Season Opener

Toms River, NJ - The 2024 Ocean County College Invitational Golf Championship was played yesterday at LBI National Golf and Resort in Little Egg Harbor, and the 2024 Vikings golf team is on its way. Placing 4th in their 1st tournament of the season, OCC, led by returning stars Tommy Donachy and Logan Burnett, teed it up and confidently drove it right down the middle. Ocean carded a 419 four-man total on the LBI links, beating Union County by 20 strokes and coming within striking distance of 3rd place finisher County College of Morris (396).

Defending Region 19 Champion RCSJ Gloucester wound up in first at 366 strokes in tough, windy, and chilly conditions. Union's Patrick Murray, 2023's Region 19 Individual champion, carded the only sub-80 round of the day (77) to finish in 1st. RCSJ Cumberland's Mateo Medina finished up in 2nd, 7 strokes behind Murray, while Gloucester's Logan Perrone and Lehigh Carbon's Ed Weaver tied for 3rd place with fine 87s.

Tommy Donachy's 96 and Logan Burnett's 99 led the way for the Vikings. Second-year player Jeremy Schiel's 107, his best score in competition to date, helped the cause, with first-year players Jeremy Kalman and Dylan O'Rourke chipping in.

"The day was nice," said OCC Golf Head Coach Sean Fawcett. "The sun was out, and it was a very good way to begin our season. Tommy and Logan very played well in very tough conditions. Only a handful of players were able to break 90, and there were quite a few who shot over 100, and that's saying something. The boys know we're running a marathon, not a sprint. Little by little, if we keep chipping away at it, by season's end, when it counts the most, we'll be swinging and putting our best and challenging for the top spots."

The Vikings return to the links on Monday, April 1, when they travel to Galloping Hill Park and Golf Course in Kenilworth, NJ for a match hosted by Union College.
